De vorm van de mond en de stand van de tanden en kiezen worden namelijk voor een groot deel bepaald door de functie van de spieren in en om de mond. Afwijkende mondgewoonten kunnen het evenwicht tussen die spieren onderling verstoren. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan foutieve slikgewoonten,\u00a0mondademen, duimen,\u00a0vingerzuigen, lispelen of slissen.<br \/>\nAls bepaalde spieren of spiergroepen in en om de mond niet goed functioneren, heeft dit vrijwel altijd een direct gevolg voor de vorm en de ontwikkeling van het gebit en\/of de kaken. Vaak is er dan ook sprake van een articulatiestoornis;\u00a0addentaal\u00a0(met de tong tegen de tanden) of interdentaal (met de tong tussen de tanden)
