Sommige kinderen spreken klanken nog niet goed uit, hierdoor kunnen zij zichzelf niet goed duidelijk maken. Je kind vindt het dan lastig om de bewegingen die nodig zijn voor het spreken onder controle te krijgen. Tijdens het spreken worden de meeste klanken door de mond gevormd. Het zachte gehemelte trekt op en daardoor wordt de mondholte aan de achterzijde afgesloten. Zo ontsnapt er geen lucht door de neus. Alleen bij de klanken \/m\/, \/n\/ en \/ng\/ wordt deze afsluiting niet gemaakt, zodat deze klanken door de neus klinken. Klanken of lettergrepen worden herhaald of verlengd. Soms worden ze er met veel spanning uit geperst. Daarnaast kunnen bij het stotteren begeleidende symptomen voorkomen. Voorbeelden zijn meebewegingen in het gezicht en van lichaamsdelen, verstoring van de adem, transpireren en spanning. Naast deze zichtbare en hoorbare symptomen zijn er ook verborgen symptomen. Vermijden van situaties, bepaalde woorden of klanken omzeilen, gebrek aan zelfvertrouwen en angst om te spreken. Stotteren kan de communicatie ernstig verstoren.
